Treatment FAQ's.
Your questions answered. Without the dental jargon.
Going to the dentist often comes with questions.
What does a treatment involve? Do I really need it? Will it hurt? How long will it take? And what will it cost?
We believe you should have clear answers before you make decisions about your dental care.
We've brought together some of the questions we're asked most often, covering everything from regular check-ups and children's dentistry through to restorative, cosmetic and surgical treatments.
And if you can't find the answer you're looking for, just ask us.
General dentistry
How often should I have a dental check-up?
The right frequency depends on your individual dental health, history and risk factors. We'll recommend an appointment schedule that's appropriate for you rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Do I need to see a dentist if nothing hurts?
Yes. Many dental problems don't cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular examinations allow us to identify potential issues and help you maintain your oral health.
Do you treat children?
Yes. We welcome children and believe early dental experiences can help establish positive habits and a healthy relationship with dental care.
Restorative dentistry
Can my damaged tooth be saved?
Often, there may be several options depending on how much healthy tooth remains and the condition of the tooth. We'll assess it carefully and explain whether a filling, inlay, onlay, crown or another treatment may be appropriate.
What's the difference between a crown, bridge and filling?
They each have different purposes. A filling repairs a damaged area of a tooth, while a crown covers and protects a more extensively compromised tooth. A bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
We'll explain which option is appropriate for your particular situation.
Do I have to replace a missing tooth?
Not necessarily. Whether a missing tooth should be replaced depends on its location, your dental health, function and individual circumstances. We'll discuss the options with you.
Surgical dentistry
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. Healthy wisdom teeth that aren't causing problems may simply be monitored. We'll assess their position and condition before recommending removal.
When does a tooth need to be extracted?
We always aim to preserve natural teeth where possible. Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged, infected or compromised to be predictably restored.
Do I need to see a specialist?
Not always. Some treatments can be provided at Claremont Dental, while more complex cases may be referred to an appropriate specialist.
We have a trusted network of specialists and are comfortable referring when we believe another clinician can provide the right level of care for your needs.
Cosmetic dentistry
Will cosmetic dentistry make my smile look natural?
That's always the aim.
We don't believe cosmetic dentistry should give everyone the same smile. Treatment is planned around your individual teeth, proportions, appearance and goals.
Is Invisalign right for me?
Invisalign can be suitable for many adults and teenagers, but it isn't appropriate for every case. We'll assess your teeth and bite before recommending clear aligner treatment.
Can whitening make my crowns or veneers whiter?
No. Whitening affects natural tooth structure and won't change the colour of existing crowns, veneers or fillings. We'll discuss this with you before treatment.
Dental anxiety and sedation
I'm really anxious about the dentist. Can you help?
Absolutely.
Dental anxiety is more common than many people realise, and there's no judgement at Claremont Dental. We'll take the time to understand your concerns and discuss ways to make your experience more comfortable.
Can sedation help with dental anxiety?
For appropriate patients, sedation can help reduce anxiety and make dental treatment a more comfortable experience. We'll assess your individual circumstances before recommending whether sedation is suitable.
Will I be completely asleep under sedation?
Not necessarily. Different levels and methods of sedation are available depending on the individual and the treatment required. We'll explain what you can expect before treatment.
Sleep apnoea
Can a dentist diagnose sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea requires appropriate medical or sleep assessment and diagnosis. We can discuss your concerns and, where appropriate, work alongside your doctor or sleep specialist.
Can a dental appliance help with sleep apnoea?
For some appropriately diagnosed patients, an oral appliance can be an effective treatment option for obstructive sleep apnoea. Suitability depends on your individual circumstances.
Does snoring mean I have sleep apnoea?
Not necessarily. Snoring can have several causes, but persistent or significant snoring can be worth discussing with your doctor or dentist.
Costs, health funds & payment
How much will my treatment cost?
The cost depends on the treatment required and your individual circumstances. We'll explain the recommended treatment and associated costs before you proceed.
Do you accept health funds?
Yes. Claremont Dental accepts a wide range of major health funds. Your level of cover will depend on your individual policy, so we recommend checking your available benefits.
Do you offer payment plans?
We understand that some dental treatment represents a significant investment. Talk to our team about the payment options available for your treatment.
