Lets set things straight?
There are many motivations behind getting braces, from improving your appearance to developing self-confidence, restoring functionality and boosting your health and wellbeing.
So, what’s yours?
At Claremont Dental, we tailor our orthodontic treatment to the individual and do whatever it takes to make you as comfortable as possible. Whether you need your crooked teeth aligned to improve your bite or smile, we take care of you with experience and empathy.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals primarily with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of incorrectly positioned teeth and jaws.
Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopaedics". In severe malocclusions that can be a part of craniofacial abnormality, management often requires a combination of orthodontics with headgear or reverse pull facemask and / or jaw surgery or orthographic surgery.
Dr James Andrews has completed a two-year mini-residency in orthodontics with Dr Derek Mahoney at Full Face Orthodontics in Sydney (2015-2017). He has also completed Orthodontics Module 1 at the orthodontic department Sydney Dental Hospital. James practices all disciplines of dentistry and is an accredited Invisalign provider. He is not a specialist orthodontist, however has recently been offered a place at UBC in Vancouver to specialise in this field.
If you would like a second opinion with a local specialist orthodontist, just ask - we are more than happy to organise this for you.
When should I consider orthodontics?
Do you have teeth that are crowded or crooked and more difficult to keep clean? Are you concerned with your smile? Or is it that your teeth don’t align correctly when you bite? Poorly aligned teeth can contribute to jaw joint problems (TMJ), accelerated wear of teeth and airway problems, which can lead to poor sleep and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
What other benefits do orthodontic patients enjoy?
In addition to a healthier, straighter smile and a full, beautiful facial profile, our patients enjoy improved self-esteem and better function of their smile as a whole. You may be surprised at how well orthodontic care can improve your quality of life once you’re able to relax, smile and laugh around other people without feeling the need to hide your teeth.
At what age should a child receive an orthodontic evaluation?
Our team recommends an orthodontic assessment as early as age seven. By identifying early airway problems such as poor tongue position, enlarged tonsils and adenoids and early non-nutritive habits such as thumb sucking, our team can intercept and correct the underlying disorder leading to the jaw imbalance and crooked teeth. Early treatment can often prevent the need for extraction of teeth due to our abilities to modify the underlying bone and create more room for the teeth. In doing so we can often enhance the profile by avoiding the damaging effects of extraction orthodontics.
How do I get started?
If you’re looking for an orthodontic treatment in Perth, you have found your home. At Claremont Dental, we provide a free initial consultation to families and patients. At the time of your visit, we’ll discuss whether or not you need orthodontic treatment, and how long it may take to complete. While we treat patients of all ages, the earlier a problem is identified the easier it is to correct.
We also offer orthopaedics (growth modification), generally before the adolescent growth spurt, and if needed, orthodontics whereby braces are used to straighten the teeth and enhance your facial profile.
Your options have opened up
Modern advances in orthodontic technology mean your options have opened up more than ever.
Claremont Dental’s orthodontic team uses the many treatment modalities like Invisalign aligners, as well as Damon fixed braces, a popular brace system focusing on low force application, to give you the smile you deserve.
We can determine what will and won't work for you – feel free to ask!
This is the most common way to straighten teeth. It is simple to use and the dentist has specific control over each tooth in the system.
The Damon System is not just about revolutionary braces and wires - it’s a whole new way of treating patients.
Traditional orthodontic treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer and can leave a narrower arch and a flat profile. Damon smiles are full, natural 10-tooth smiles achieved with light, biologically sensible forces and are specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient.
The length of treatment involved with this form of orthodontics varies for every patient and can even be completed in as little as six months!
Dr James Andrews and Dr Daniel Abbondanza combine three key components, which when used together deliver faster treatment, fewer appointments, greater comfort and consistently high quality results:
- Damon passive self-ligating braces that eliminate the need for elastic or metal “ties”. With Damon tie-less braces you can experience treatment without tightening.
- Light high-technology shape-memory wires that move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments.
- A new clinically proven treatment approach that aligns your teeth and enhances your facial aesthetics – usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders.
Traditional braces are tied in with elastics, which cause friction and pressure, making treatment slower and less comfortable. Damon braces use a slide mechanism to hold the wire, which allows teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably.
They are also designed to be discreet, comfortable and easy to keep clean. Without the elastic ties, which attract and collect plaque, this solution makes dental hygiene easier during treatment.

Invisalign uses a series of customised, clear aligners to straighten teeth in a quicker amount of time and with fewer office visits than traditional braces. Thousands of orthodontists and dentists throughout Australia use Invisalign braces to accurately and effectively treat their patients.
Invisalign aligners are:
Invisalign aligners cannot be seen while you are wearing them! Friends, family members and co-workers may never even know you are wearing braces (unless you tell them!).
Comfortable to wear
The aligners are made from a special plastic that has smooth, rounded edges so they won't irritate your mouth and tissues like traditional braces often can.
Customised just for you
Your Invisalign aligners utilise advanced 3D computer imaging technology to replicate an exact impression of your mouth and teeth, which then allows the customisation of each aligner to fit your mouth and move your teeth into the proper position over time.
There's no need to change your lifestyle with Invisalign! Unlike traditional metal braces, you can remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush and floss, as well as for any special occasions. You will begin to notice a significant difference usually within a year, however this can vary from patient to patient.
Why choose Invisalign?
People everywhere are beginning to experience the benefits of Invisalign treatment. Here's why people just like you are choosing Invisalign over traditional braces:
- With Invisalign you can have a straighter, healthier smile without all the noticeable wires and brackets of traditional braces.
- Invisalign helps improve your overall oral health by making it easier to brush and floss, while also maintaining the proper tooth structure.
- You don't need to change anything about your current lifestyle! With Invisalign you can continue participating in day-to-day activities without changing a thing. Invisalign is great for professionals, athletes, brides and parents.
- Office visits and check-ups are easy, quick and painless. Fewer appointments are required throughout your entire treatment.
How long is treatment?
This is our most commonly asked question. With traditional braces, treatment times can take between 18 and 30 months. But with an Invisalign treatment, it may only take between nine and 15 months - that's almost half the time!
How does Invisalign work?
When you begin your Invisalign treatment you will receive several sets of custom fit aligners. Each set of aligners is worn for only two weeks. After two weeks you can switch your aligners with the next set. Over time you will notice changes in the alignment of your teeth, and in just a few months you will have a straighter, healthier smile!
The Inman Aligner is the perfect solution for crowding or protrusion of the front teeth. It is really fast, very safe and great value compared to other systems. With the patented Inman Aligner, your front teeth can be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks. Most cases complete in six to 16 weeks, and because it’s removable, you can take it out to fit with your lifestyle.
The Inman Aligner has nickel titanium coil springs that power two aligner bows that gently oppose each other, guiding the teeth into their new position. These gentle forces are active over a very large range of movement, which is why the Inman Aligner works so quickly.
This image shows the squeeze effect of the two-aligner bows on the front teeth. The inner bow pushes forwards, while the outer bow pulls back on the front teeth.
