Tooth extractions.
Tooth extractions.

Sometimes removing a tooth is the right thing to do.

While we always aim to preserve healthy natural teeth where possible, there are times when a tooth is too damaged, infected or compromised to be reliably retained.

At Claremont Dental, we'll carefully assess the tooth and explain whether extraction is necessary, what your options are and what to expect from the procedure.

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw.

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth has extensive decay or damage, is causing ongoing problems, or cannot be predictably restored.

Our priority is always to understand whether the tooth can be saved before considering its removal.

Is it right for you?

An extraction may be appropriate when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, fractured or otherwise unable to be restored successfully.

In some situations, removing a tooth may also be recommended as part of a broader treatment plan.

We'll assess your individual circumstances and explain the alternatives before recommending an extraction.

Removing a tooth isn't the first option. It's the right option when the tooth can no longer be predictably retained.

Our approach

Preserve what we can. Remove what we can't.

We believe natural teeth are worth preserving whenever possible.

We'll carefully assess the condition of your tooth and consider whether restorative treatment could provide a predictable long-term result.

If extraction is the appropriate option, we'll explain why, what the procedure involves and what options may be available for replacing the tooth afterwards.

Clear advice. Thoughtful treatment. No unnecessary intervention.

What to expect

We'll examine the tooth and may use X-rays to understand its condition and position before treatment.

The procedure is performed using appropriate local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

After the extraction, we'll provide clear instructions about caring for the area, managing your recovery and what to expect over the following days.

Where appropriate, we'll also discuss what happens next - including whether the missing tooth should be replaced with a bridge, denture or dental implant.

Your questions answered

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

An extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged, decayed, infected or fractured to be predictably restored.

Is a tooth extraction painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal, and we'll explain how to care for the area during your recovery.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies depending on the tooth and the complexity of the extraction. We'll give you specific aftercare instructions and explain what to expect.

What happens after a tooth is removed?

That depends on your individual circumstances. Some missing teeth don't necessarily need to be replaced, while others may benefit from a bridge, denture or dental implant. We'll discuss the options with you.

Health funds

Your level of cover will depend on your individual policy, so we recommend checking your available benefits before treatment.
