When wisdom teeth become a problem.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and, for some people, they can cause problems as they emerge or become impacted.

At Claremont Dental, we'll assess your wisdom teeth carefully and explain whether they need treatment, monitoring or removal - so you understand what's happening and

What are wisdom teeth?

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed.

If a wisdom tooth is healthy, functional and not causing problems, your dentist may recommend monitoring it rather than removing it.

Removal may be considered if a wisdom tooth is causing pain, infection, decay, gum problems, damage to neighbouring teeth or other dental concerns.

We'll assess your individual situation before recommending treatment.

Is removal right for you?

Family dental care is for anyone looking for a dentist to look after their oral health over the long term.

Whether you're overdue for a check-up, have noticed something you're concerned about or simply want to establish good dental habits for your family, we're happy to start with a conversation.

Our approach

Don't remove it just because it's there.

We don't believe wisdom teeth should automatically be removed simply because they exist.

We'll assess their position, development and impact on your overall dental health before discussing your options.

If removal is appropriate, we'll explain why, what is involved and what you can expect.

Good care starts with knowing whether treatment is actually needed.

What to expect

We'll examine your wisdom teeth and may recommend dental X-rays to understand their position and relationship to the surrounding teeth and structures.

If removal is recommended, we'll explain the procedure, the expected recovery and any relevant risks before treatment begins.

Depending on the complexity of the case, we may also recommend referral to an appropriate dental specialist.

After removal, we'll provide clear instructions about caring for the area and what to expect during recovery.

Your questions answered

Does everyone need their wisdom teeth removed?

No. If wisdom teeth are healthy and not causing problems, they may simply be monitored during regular dental check-ups.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth are causing a problem?

Pain, swelling, difficulty opening your mouth, gum inflammation or discomfort at the back of your mouth can be signs of a problem. However, some issues may not cause symptoms, which is why assessment is important.

Is wisdom tooth removal painful?

The procedure is performed using appropriate anaesthesia to keep you comfortable. Some discomfort and swelling can be expected afterwards, depending on the complexity of the removal.

Will I need to see a specialist?

Not necessarily. Some wisdom teeth can be removed at Claremont Dental, while more complex cases may be referred to an appropriate specialist. We'll recommend what's right for your individual circumstances.

Health funds

Claremont Dental accepts a wide range of major health funds.

Your level of cover will depend on your individual policy, so we recommend checking your available benefits before treatment.
